Charts Without LORAN-C Grid Lines
This first ever chart customization is offered in response to a long standing, broad based request of professional mariners and serious recreational boaters.  That is, to have NOAA optionally remove the LORAN-C grid lines from the approximately 260 charts that display LORAN-C.  This option enhances safety by permitting the mariner to see the remaining chart features more clearly.

Mariners and retail agents should note that NOAA queried mariners regarding removal of LORAN-C.  Mariners indicated that removal of the grid lines was sufficient to their needs.  Mariners’ principal desire was to reduce clutter in the body of the chart.  Due to the cartographic difficulty of removing all chart references to LORAN, NOAA, with mariner concurrence, left on the chart the LORAN scale and various notes referencing LORAN.  Mariners reviewing prototype charts indicated that this was quite acceptable since they would be the ones requesting the “no loran” chart and so would understand its usage.

During the past year, NOAA cartographers worked to separate the LORAN-C grid lines from each of the 260 charts. Simultaneously, NOAA and its private partner, OceanGrafix, worked to create an industrial process to reliably compose and print the chart images.  In addition, the NOAA Coast Survey electronic commerce site was modified to handle such orders.   The option is available now to all mariners through OceanGrafix' retail network.
